Some resorts cater to a vacation of sunbathing and pool time, which is great—if that’s what you’re looking for. But if you want a Florida family vacation that’s equal parts relaxation and recreation, you need to check out Club Med Sandpiper Bay, an all-inclusive family resort in Port St. Lucie. Whether you’re vacationing with small children or traveling with older kids, families love the amenities at Club Med. The resort hotel is nestled along the St. Lucie River with a large, family pool. You don’t have to register for these programs, though, in order to take advantage of the resort’s outdoor amenities. You can play a game or two on Club Med’s own basketball court, volleyball court or football field. Club Med also has its own beach directly on the river for parents to lounge in the sun on the hotel’s cozy chairs and work on their tan while kids build sandcastles. Guests can use the resort’s kayaks and stand-up paddleboards to venture out on the water.

For some more adrenaline-inducing activities, consider waterskiing and wakeboarding—organized by the hotel. And for something a bit unusual, try out the Sea Scooter, an underwater machine that tugs swimmers rapidly through the water. Ever wondered what it’s like to fly? Try out the hotel’s Flyboard, a watercraft version of a hoverboard where guests can mount themselves on an air-powered board and fly several feet up in the air over the river.

Club Med Sandpiper Bay in St. Lucie also has infant and toddler programs, some for parents to enjoy with their littlest travelers and others designed to give parents a little free time. It’s refreshing to see a resort cater to small children, and provide things like Baby Corners in the resort restaurants that serve food for kids, toddler playgrounds, and an evening Pyjamas Club slumber party for parents and their kids. Other small-children’s activities include Baby Gym, Arts Studio, Zumbatomic and a series of toddler activities such as crafts and water games.

Finally, Club Med’s accommodations were designed with families in mind. Whether you’re traveling with a small group or a large extended family, the hotel has plenty of rooms to suit your needs. Families with up to five people may want to rent out the Deluxe Family Room with its own living room and private terrace. For easily family dining, the outdoor Riverside Grill & BBQ has great food and sunset views, and the resort’s Marketplace features a range of international cuisine from Asian noodles to pizza to tacos.

Club Med Sandpiper Bay is one of the best places to stay in Florida for families who want a fun, active vacation. But you don’t have to stay on property for the entire stay. Get a glimpse of “old Florida” when you visit the marinas in Fort Pierce and drop a line in the water. Fort Pierce is considered one of the oldest fishing villages in the state (established in 1901) and families can opt to fish from the coast, rent a boat or book a private charter. In Fort Pierce, you also can visit the Indian River Lagoon, the county’s most iconic estuary that’s home to 4,000 species of plants and animal life.

St. Lucie has 21 miles of uncrowded beaches, most of which are on Hutchinson Island. They are some of the most beautiful beaches on the Atlantic Coast—perfect for lounging, playing and horseback riding. The beaches in St. Lucie feel much more secluded than many destinations in Florida. Families can further explore the area beyond the beach by kayaking through the mangroves or going on an airboat excursion to get up close and personal with alligators and turtles.
